Amazing Math Volunteers….PhD work optional

Volunteers Christina and Bette plan 2009-2010's math curriculum

The greatest thing happened today.  Our math students took a placement test.  Okay, so maybe that doesn’t sound all that extraordinary.  But here is how it became the coolest thing ever.  Our two math instructors, Christina and Bette, administered the tests, graded the tests and then had a great discussion about how our math program could really meet the students where they are.  Tests were organized and reorganized.  Ability to do word problems verses basic calucation skills among different students were discussused.   The two classes were formed and then reformed and at the end of the day the answer was, “We need a 3rd math class to truly meet the needs of our students.”

I assure you I am all in favor of meeting the needs of our students and I wanted to support Bette and Christina in any way I could, but recruiting another volunteering sounded like a tough order.   So I head back to my desk scratching my head and sit down to read email and there on top is an email from Michael.  He is wanting to know if I still need volunteers and he would really like to volunteer in Math.

So where does this leave Pre-GED School?  Well, for starters we have a great math program.  We are meeting the needs of students that are just now learning basic computation.  We are helping students that need to expand their knowledge of fractions, decimals and percents so they can suceed in real life situations and GED testing.  And we are offering an intro to algebra for students that will be getting their GED this year and going on to even greater pursuits.
